Matthew Haney was born to Isaac and Mary Haney in Township #9 Nassau, the area that later became known as Thorold, Ontario. His father had been a chain bearer during the August Jones survey in 1788 of Township #9, Nassau which was largely populated by Butler’s Rangers and those associated with them. Matthew’s parents were awarded crown patents on lots in Thorold where they had a mill. From 1798 to 1803, the family was frequently in York, and eventually settled on Lot 11 Concs 5 & 6 in Pelham sometime after 1803, while maintaining their milling interests in Thorold.

Robert Ross (b1776) joined the 25th Regiment of Foot as an ensign in 1789 and served with distinction with the 20th (East Devonshire) Regiment throughout the Napoleonic Wars in Egypt, Italy, Portugal, Spain and France. He earned four gold battle medals for his illustrious role in four battles against the French — Maida (in Italy), Corunna, Vittoria and the Pyrenees (all in Spain). These four honours earned him the Army Gold Cross. He was promoted Major General at the Battle of Vittoria.

John Moore was born October 8, 1791 in Parsborough, King’s County, Nova Scotia. He married Elizabeth Foreman or Freeman, who was born July 6, 1800 at Amhurst, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. They married in the Gore District on June 256, 1818.

Reuben Green was born in February, 1783, in Sussex County, New Jersey. In the summer of 1786, he made the long and arduous journey with his brother Henry and his United Empire Loyalist parents Charles and Rebecca (Scritchfield) Green from New Jersey to Canada. As they passed through the Blue Mountains of Pennsylvania, three and a half year old Reuben, seated in the saddle basket (pannier) of their horse, had a terrifying view of the deep gorge below; this memory of the journey haunted him for the rest of his 90 year life. They crossed at Lewiston to Queenston on 18 September 1786 and settled in Mount Dorchester, (later known as Stamford, and finally as Niagara Falls). Eight days after their arrival his pregnant mother gave birth in the Bender’s barn to his sister Rebecca; the first white child born in the district.

Came to Canada at age 16. Served in the War of 1812. Married Eleanor Lillie in 1813. Lived for many years on a farm near Brighton where he was appointed JP District Councillor, Commissioner of the court, and Captain of the Militia. Later moved to Chatham-Kent where he past away.

The Reverend Leonard Haney was born to Isaac and Mary Haney in Thorold, Ontario (Upper Canada) on 10 January 1796. The family moved to the Pelham area around 1808. The first documented mention of Isaac Haney in this area we have found is in 1788 when he helped serve as chain bearer in the land survey of land of and around Thorold.

Peter Haun was born in 1778, likely in Pennsylvania, Thirteen Colonies, the youngest son of Mathias Haun and his wife, Ann. Mathias Haun came to the Province in 1787 with his wife and ten children.

Peter James Plato, UE was born in 1756 in Albany, New York Province, Thirteen Colonies, the son of Christian Plato, UE and his wife, Dorotea May. During the American Revolution Peter James fought with Butler’s Rangers in the Ohio Valley and for this service, received 300 acres of land in the Conc 13 of Bertie Twp.
