William Parker was born in St John, New Brunswick in January 1790, the son of UE Loyalist Sgt. John Parker of the New York Volunteers and his wife Nancy Watson.  John and Nancy were born and married in County Cork, Ireland, emigrating to Nova Scotia, but then moving to Northumberland County, Pennsylvania in 1776.  Following the American Revolution, they returned to Nova Scotia before making their way to Wainfleet Twp., Lincoln County, Upper Canada.

Ira Bearss
3rd Regiment Lincoln Militia

A Quaker in the militia?  Pacificism is one of the basic tenets of the Quakers.  Moreover, during the War of 1812 Quakers, Mennonites and Tunkers could be exempt from the usually compulsory military duty thanks to Sir John Graves Simcoe and the Militia Act of 1808.  Yet Ira Bearss, 1789-1874, a Quaker, served with the 3rd Regiment Lincoln Militia during the War of 1812.   Ira’s brother Daniel Bearss, 1788-1850, served in the same regiment as did a third brother,  Josiah Bearss, 1791-1879.  Josiah’s grave in Zion Cemetery, Ridgeway, Ontario, has already been commemorated with a War of 1812 veterans marker.

Peter James Plato3rd Regiment Lincoln Militia

Peter James Plato, UE was born in 1756 in Albany, New York Province, Thirteen Colonies, the son of Christian Plato, UE and his wife, Dorotea May.  During the American Revolution Peter James fought with Butler’s Rangers in the Ohio Valley and for this service, received 300 acres of land in the Conc 13 of  Bertie Twp.

William Scarlett3rd Regiment Lincoln Militia

William Scarlett was born c. 1760 in Drumgoon, Cavan County, Ireland.  He is first found in 1787 as a Private in the 58th Regiment of  Foot in the  Canada-British Regimental Registers of Service, 1756-1800.  In these registers, it notes he was 25 years of age with a pale complexion, long face, hazel eyes, brown hair, being born in Drumgoon and his occupation was listed as a Weaver.

Andrew Miller3rd Regiment Lincoln Militia

The early life of young Andrew Miller, who was born in October 1766, is a mystery.  One family tree states that Andrew was born in Ulster Township,Pennsylvania, another tree suggests that Andrew was born in Ulster County, New York. However, the Miller family has come to the conclusion that Andrew was born in the Colony of Pennsylvania based on the theory that is mentioned later in this biography.

Peter Tuttle3rd Regiment Lincoln Militia

Peter Tuttle was born in Bertie, Lincoln County, Upper Canada in 1797, one of ten known children of Jeremiah Tuttle and Susannah Slaght DUE.  His father, Jeremiah Tuttle, who came to Canada about 1787, farmed Lots 19, Concs 1 & 2 Bertie.  Jeremiah served in the 3rd Regiment Lincoln Militia during the War of 1812-14.

John Miller3rd Regiment Lincoln Militia

John Miller was born c 1764 in Manorland Twp., Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.  In the early 1800s he came to Canada with his wife, Christiana  and children.  In 1809, John purchased Lots 15, Concs 5 & 6 , Bertie Twp. from George Wintemute, although we find evidence the family was on this property as early as 1802.
