Richard James Stephens Obituary: Chatham tri-weekly planet Friday, Jan. 29th 1876. (Often went with his middle name over his first name).
“We announce today the death of Mr. James Stephens who passed away on Tuesday last at the ripe age of 84. The late Mr Stephens was the father of Messrs. W.H., Calvin, Alva, James, Dan, and Ezra, gentleman, who, like their deceased parent, are widely and favorably known among us. We last saw the old gentleman on the occasion of the distribution of the 1812 gratuity money, he being one of the honored recipients. Mr. S. is the first who has passed away of that number of gallant old Canadians who assembled on that occasion, and who spent a pleasant day fighting over again the old battles of the last war. Soon they all will be numbered with the honored dead.”
