Jacob Hoffman was the son of Nicholas Hoffman and his wife Abigail. Jacob was born somewhere in the Thirteen Colonies in 1759. When hostilities broke out, he joined Colonel Edward Jessop’s Corps of Rangers, while his brother Nicholas Jr., joined Butler’s Rangers.
Jacob Hoffman Jr. (Huffman) was born in Bertie Twp. in 1790, the first son of Jacob Hoffman (Huffman) UE (Private in Col. Edward Jessop’s Corp.) and Anna Ransier, DUE (daughter of Andres Ransier, Private Butler’s Rangers and his wife Agnes). He grew up on his father’s farm on the north side of Bertie Road, straddling Ridge Road North, known as Lots 3, Conc 9, 10 and 11th of Bertie. Jacob applied for Lord Dorchester’s Bounty when he attained the age of 21 years, in 1811, however the Order-In-Council was not issued until 1833.

George Hoffman (Huffman) was born February 18, 1795 in Bertie Twp., Lincoln Co., Upper Canada, one of at least six children born to Michael Hoffman (Huffman) and Elizabeth Ransier. Michael had come to this Province in 1786 with his father, mother and sisters following the American Revolution. Michael’s older brothers, Jacob and Nicholas, were both Privates in Col. Edward Jessop’s Corps and Col. Butler’s Rangers, respectively.
