I today ran across a most interesting and totally unexpected Deed of Bargain and Sale dated 20 Nov 1841 by which a Daniel David conveyed land in Hinchinbrooke to a Benjamin Babcock Jun. The deed opens as follows: “…Daniel David of the Township of Kingston County of Frontenac Midland District and Province of Canada Yeoman, as a private in a flank Company of the 1st regiment of Frontenac Militia of the one part…”. He must have taken great pride in his service.
I wondered if the Daniel David in the deed might be the same as the man recently honored for his service in the War of 1812, and have concluded that he is. Daniel David is my 3rd great-granduncle.
Daniel’s given name and surname are reversed on the following page:

A calculated date of birth for Daniel is 14 August 1790. He was born in “York State” (1851 Census of Canada), the “US” (1871 Census of Canada), and “U States” on his 18 December 1878 death record. Other documentary evidence exists, as well. Daniel came to Canada circa 1800 with his family. A land petition filed in 1839 by Daniel’s brother, Zachariah (born US c. 1792), indicated that he, Zachariah, had been in Canada since about 1800. Isaac David, the father of Daniel and Zachariah, was a cited in a deed as being a resident of Fredericksburg in 1805 when he purchased 300 acres of land near Glenburnie.
