George Gallinger Jr. was born on 7 Oct 1788 in Osnabruck Township, Stormont County to George and Margaret Gallinger, and the youngest of eight siblings. George’s father, George Sr., was a United Empire Loyalist and had served in the Kings Royal Regiment of New York during the American Revolution, along-side his three brothers and father, a German immigrant. They were living in Johnstown, New York, when their German community was threatened by the Rebels, losing everything. At the conclusion of the war they settled into the Stormont County of Upper Canada with their earned land grants and started life over in their new country.
When conflict arose from the Americans once more in 1812, both George Gallinger Sr. and Jr. stepped up to do their duty. They joined the ranks of the 1st Regiment Stormont Militia, commanded by Captain Angus Fraser, wanting to defend their new home and farmlands. They wore civilian clothing and used old American Revolution weapons. Serving without uniforms in a supply and scouting role, they did also face and come under fire against the enemy at times. Members of the Stormont Militia were present at the Battle of Ogdensburg in February 1813, Salmon River raids in 1814, as well as the Skirmish at Hoople’s Creek on 10 Nov 1813, the day before the Battle of Crysler’s Farm. That skirmish helped slow the Americans and warn the Crown forces of the enemy’s position. They also acted as support that day at Crysler’s Farm.
Order in Council for a land grant for George was made on 23 Nov 1816.
In 1818 George Jr. married Jane Cameron and went on to father eight children. The small farming community off the St. Lawrence River eventually became named Gallingertown. The now large Gallinger family had found a place of their own, safe and sound in Upper Canada.
In 1875 George Jr. was given a $20 gratuity to be paid to those who served in the War of 1812. #1078, Case No. 2690. Made through C Archibald, MP, Corporal, Stormont Corps.
George died in 1879 at the age of 91.
