Born in Vermont in 1792, Levi Hotchkiss Jr. came to Upper Canada as a young boy with his parents who settled in Leeds County near the present day village of Seeleys Bay.
In July 1812 Levi was called to duty in the Flank Company, 2nd Regiment Leeds Militia commanded by Captain John Struthers; at the age of 20 he was assigned the rank of corporal. He served at Gananoque until March 1813 and was present during the American attack on the settlement on September 21, 1812.
