Daniel McAfee

Daniel McAfee was born 4 Aug 1791 in New York State, the son of Lieut. Dudley McAfee.  By  1812 he had crossed the Niagara River and was living in the Niagara Peninsula.  He served as a Sergeant, serving under Captain Samuel Hatt’s Flank Company, 5th Regiment Lincoln Militia, from 1812 to 1814.  Daniel was at the taking of Detroit and at the Battle of Queenston Heights.  He was taken prisoner by the Americans while conveying prisoners down the lake to Toronto and confined at Greenbush, near Albany, digging himself out and escaping.  He was discharged at Queenston.  His service is well-documented in 1812 Upper Canada Returns, Nominal Rolls and Paylists, RG 9 1B7. In 1876, when the  Dominion of Canada presented the veterans of the War of 1812 with an annuity, Daniel is 84 years old and applied for this annuity from Galt in Waterloo County.

In Bertie Twp., Lincoln County, on 7 Jan 1824 he married Elizabeth Hughson, born in King’s County, New Brunswick in 1791.  Elizabeth was the daughter of UE Loyalist Nathaniel Hughson and his wife, Rebecca Kate Land.  They had four children:

  • Rebecca, b1821, d1893, m Joseph Hall
  • Samuel Dudley b1822, d1828 in Yarmouth Twp., Elgin County, bur. Seminary Cemetery
  • Robert Land Hughson, b1826 in Yarmouth Twp., Elgin County, d1871, m Sophronia

Elizabeth died at the age of 40 on 24 May 1831 and was laid to rest with her son at Seminary. Daniel remarried in 15 Jan 1833, Rebecca Jane Jones, b1805.  Daniel and Rebecca had three children:

  • Daniel Archibald,  1833, Yarmouth Twp., Elgin County
  • Angus George, b1834, Yarmouth Twp., Elgin County, m Sarah Minor
  • Melissa Ann, b1838, Yarmouth Twp., Elgin County

Rebecca died at the age of 35 on 21 Oct 1840 and was laid to rest in Seminary Cemetery.  Daniel died of old age, at the age of 87 years on 20 July 1878 in St. Thomas and was buried with his wives and son in Seminary.
