Chatterson was born in the United States and came to Canada at an early age. He married Sophia Kerlin on August 29, 1809 in Ernestown which is close to what is now Kingston, Ontario.
Ernestown is a historic township in Lennox and Addington County. It was originally known as Second Town because it was surveyed after Kingston Township but was renamed in 1784 after Prince Ernest Augustus. In 1998 it became part of the Loyalist Township.
Chatterson enlisted in the Militia and served in the 2nd Flank Company 1st Regiment Lincoln Militia.
Chatterson was awarded a land grant after the war. Joseph Chatterson’s family moved to Ancaster Twp by 1820 and together with his wife Sophia, they had 13 children, two of whom died in infancy.
Chatterson moved to Oakland probably in the 1830’s bringing some of his children with him. Some of them were adults and stayed on in Ancaster Township.
Chatterson is buried in the Mount Pleasant Pioneer Cemetery in Mount Pleasant.
