Militia Eastern Townships
Captain James Dittrick, commanded the Flank Company in Colonel Robert Nellis’s 4th Regiment Lincoln Militia. Of all five brothers who served in the flank companies of the Lincoln Militia during the War, James’s career is the most thoroughly documented. His “Reminisces of the early years of settlement in Niagara and St. Catharines” was published in the “Loyalist Narratives” compiled by British author George Coventry in 1860 and reprinted many times since; most recently by the Champlain Society. He was also interviewed by Benson Lossing who reported this meeting in the Pictorial Field Book of the War of 1812 published in 1869. Being a contemporary, and neighbour of William Hamilton Merritt, he is mentioned several times (often competitively) in the Biography of the Honouable William Hamilton Merritt, authored by Merritt’s younger son. James is also recorded in the ”Merritt Papers” preserved by the Archives of Ontario.

William Brown Bradley and his twin brother Lewis Turner
Bradley were born in Savannah, Georgia c1771. Their father, Richard Bradley, died c1780-81. During the Revolutionary War he was employed by the Commissariat, a non-uniformed civilian body. Their mother was Sarah Turner, daughter of Lewis and Jeston Turner of Whitemarsh Island, Georgia.

104th Regiment of Foot
Reuben Green was born in February, 1783, in Sussex County, New Jersey. In the summer of 1786, he made the long and arduous journey with his brother Henry and his United Empire Loyalist parents Charles and Rebecca (Scritchfield) Green from New Jersey to Canada. As they passed through the Blue Mountains of Pennsylvania, three and a half year old Reuben, seated in the saddle basket (pannier) of their horse, had a terrifying view of the deep gorge below; this memory of the journey haunted him for the rest of his 90 year life. They crossed at Lewiston to Queenston on 18 September 1786 and settled in Mount Dorchester, (later known as Stamford, and finally as Niagara Falls). Eight days after their arrival his pregnant mother gave birth in the Bender’s barn to his sister Rebecca; the first white child born in the district.

Solomon Vrooman enlisted in the Lincoln Militia when war broke out in 1812 along with his brother, James, and fought in the battles of Stony Creek and Queenston Heights 13 Oct 1812 as well as Beaver Dams and Lundy’s Lane.

William Forsyth(e) was born in 1771 in Tryon County, New York Province in the Thirteen Colonies. He was the son of United Empire Loyalist, James Forsyth and his wife, Eunice who settled in Niagara Falls.

Lieutenant-Colonel Andrew William Playfair (1790-1868) of the 104th (New Brunswick) Regiment of Foot Epic Winter Military March during the War of 1812-1814
Lieutenant-Colonel Andrew William Playfair, born in 1790 in Paris, France, son of William the eminent author and inventor, was a distinguished soldier, writer, and Empire-builder.1 His father, William Playfair, invented three fundamental forms of the statistical graph the time-series line graph, the bar chart and the pie chart2 and a prolific author of political economy writing in both English and French.
