Philip Embury was born c 1785-87 in Fredericksburgh Township, a son of Loyalist Andrew Embury UE and Jane Bell, (herself a daughter of  a UE). Philip was named after his great-uncle Philip Embury who is considered to be the founder of Methodism in America.

In the same township in 1807 our veteran Philip married Martha Van Tassel the daughter of a former Rebel in the American Revolution. The Van Tassels were originally from Tarrytown NY (a.k.a Sleepy Hollow).  By the time of the War of 1812 Philip was residing in Sidney Township, Hastings Co. ON. which explains his presence in the 1st Regiment Hastings Militia commanded by Captain Jacob W Meyers.  Sometime after 1832 the Emburys moved north to Madoc Township where Philip was struck and killed by a tree on July 7, 1845. He was buried in Hazzards Corners Cemetery.
