Peter Tuttle was born in Bertie, Lincoln County, Upper Canada in 1797, one of ten known children of Jeremiah Tuttle and Susannah Slaght DUE.  His father, Jeremiah Tuttle, who came to Canada about 1787, farmed Lots 19, Concs 1 & 2 Bertie.  Jeremiah served in the 3rd Regiment Lincoln Militia during the War of 1812-14.

Peter TuttleHis mother, Susannah Slaght, was the daughter of James Slaght UE and Hope Howey.  James Slaght fled New Jersey with his family in 1786 to escape persecution for supporting the British cause during the Revolution and was granted land in Stamford.

During the summer of 1814, Private Peter Tuttle, at age 17, served in Major John Warren’s Company of the 3rd Regiment Lincoln Militia in Capt. William Powell’s Detachment.

Peter married Charity Church around 1820.  Charity was born in the USA in 1802.  They had seven known children:

  • Margaret (Septimus Jennings, Isaac Nunn, Dionus Leppert)
  • James (Ellen C)
  • Jeremiah (Sarah Ann, Mary Ann Jennings, Mary Delosa Burns, Anna)

  • Esther Ann (Robert Cruse)

Peter TuttleThe 1852 Census recorded Peter Tuttle farming 206 acres of Lots 21 and 22, Concs 1 & 2 Bertie, half of which was still “unimproved.”  The 1871 Census taken the year before his death, recorded Peter farming 186 acres of Lot 22, Conc 1 Bertie.

Over the years, Peter, perhaps emulating his father’s example, acquired additional properties in the Ridgeway district which would become part of his estate to be distributed amongst his children.

Peter Tuttle died on 13 October 1872 at age 77 years.  He and Charity are buried in Old Ridgeway Cemetery in Ridgeway.

Peter’s will, executed three days before his death, left his estate to his wife Charity. Immediately after Peter’s death, Charity executed a very detailed will distributing Peter’s numerous properties amongst some of their children.
